Up Close with a Wizard | Ali Plowright

An interview with Ali Plowright, creative coach and facilitator working with stories and metaphor

What makes a Wizard?

Dedication to their particular specialism, authenticity and congruency, the courage to work differently in a world that can demand sameness.

Why do you choose to be part of the Wizards Network?

I enjoy the collaboration, the creativity, the stimulation and the fun that comes from working with like-minded people.

Please describe what you do

All of us use metaphors in our daily life, "it’s a pain in the neck", "life is such a strain, a battle, a fight", "It’s such a heavy load to carry". Working with metaphor helps to work out what our lives are about. Once we understand what we are doing and how we are doing it we have a choice to choose a different metaphor and a different experience! I help facilitate that change.

What training have you had?

I am a certified NLP Trainer. A certified, coach, Psychotherapist, Hypnotherapist, practitioner in symbolic modelling and Firo Theory.

How can working with metaphor help with business or personal challenges?

Team generated Metaphor can unravel team disputes and lead to greater understanding of strengths and qualities.

Metaphors along with values can identify direction and create appreciation of difference and lead to greater communication and cohesion.

With one to one coaching, metaphors give insight and understanding to situations that may be difficult and stressful.

What has been one of your most interesting moments?

Working one-to-one brings many proud and humbling moments especially when people create different thoughts and perceptions allowing change and inspiration.

Whilst recently working with a group of young women in Dubai, one young woman drew a rainbow as a metaphor for her life and the last band of colour was black, she said that it represented the difficult times in her life and that without those times she would not appreciate the wonderful times. It also represented the fact that she knew that there would be difficult times, and that perception allowed her to move through them and out the other side.

It was an extraordinary moment to hear this from someone so young and with such wisdom and understanding, I felt very honoured to have shared her world.
